<h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Problem of Blockchain and Sustainability</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The main problem with blockchain technology is that it consumes a lot of energy. The fact is that the more popular cryptocurrencies become and the higher their capitalization grows, the more energy they consume as well.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Today, Bitcoin alone consumes as much electricity as smaller countries. The reason for that lies in the consensus protocol some <a href="https://casper.network/en-us/web3/blockchain/frameworks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most used blockchain frameworks</a> rely on — Proof of Work.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Proof of Work is a consensus algorithm that allows blockchain nodes to reach a consensus. Its main features are as follows:</p>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>A block can be added to the chain only if the previously generated cryptographic puzzle is solved;</li>
<li>To solve the puzzle, a node needs to spend computational power;</li>
<li>The more computational power the node spends, the more likely it is to find the solution to the puzzle first and add a new block to the chain.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As you can see, this algorithm requires quite a lot of energy, which generates a lot of greenhouse gasses and other pollutants. According to <a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/blog/environment/as-cryptocurrency-becomes-mainstream-its-carbon-footprint-can-t-be-ignored-81118" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent estimates</a>, the emission of greenhouse gasses from Bitcoin mining alone is comparable to that of countries like New Zealand!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However, as mentioned above, this negative impact on the environment can be rectified by adopting changes in technology. One of the most promising approaches here is using blockchain frameworks based on Proof of Stake instead of Proof of Work.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Proof of Stake</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Proof of Stake (PoS) is a popular alternative to Proof of Work (PoW) in blockchain technology. It has gained popularity in recent years due to its ability to provide a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to blockchain validation while maintaining security and decentralization.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Instead of relying on the intense computational power of miners to validate transactions, PoS operates on the principle of &#8220;staking.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Essentially, participants in the network are required to hold a certain amount of the cryptocurrency to be eligible to validate transactions. The more cryptocurrency held, the higher the chances of being chosen to validate the next block.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This solution not only reduces the energy consumption associated with PoW but also encourages long-term investment in cryptocurrency.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Switch to Renewables</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The use of renewable energy is another way to make blockchain more sustainable. The fact is that if the energy used by miners is derived from renewable sources, the impact of blockchain on the environment will be minimal.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Countries could drive the effort, facilitating a switch from fossil fuel plants to solar, wind, and <a href="https://e360.yale.edu/features/why-nuclear-power-must-be-part-of-the-energy-solution-environmentalists-climate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nuclear power</a> — non-emissive energy sources.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In addition, individuals and organizations themselves could try to offset their blockchain-related carbon footprint by investing in renewable energy sources. To illustrate the point, buildings can be covered with solar panels, and the electricity produced could be used to power mining rigs. Doing so would offset the carbon footprint and reduce energy costs.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">In contrast, the use of renewable energy (e.g., solar, geothermal, biomass) does not require burning fossil fuels. Thus, it drives down carbon emission and significantly reduces the total amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Other by-products from burning coal are acid rain, sludge run-off and heated water that is released back into the rivers and lakes nearby the coal-fired plants.  While efforts are being made to create “clean coal,” businesses have been reluctant to use the technology due to the high costs associated with changing their plants.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you are considering taking the plunge and switching to a <a href="https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/renewable-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">renewable energy</a> source to save money on your electric and heating bills or to help the environment, you have a lot of decisions to make. The first decision you need to make is which energy source to use in your home or business.  Do you want to switch to <a href="https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/solar-panels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">solar energy</a>, <a href="https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/big-oil-wind-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wind power</a>, <a href="https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/biomass-energy-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">biomass energy</a> or geothermal energy?</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">While there are more than these three alternative energy options, these are the easiest to implement on an individual basis.  Other sources of alternative energy, for instance, nuclear power, hydroelectric power, and natural gas require a primary power source for the heat so it can be fed to your home or business.  Solar, wind, biomass and <a href="https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/hidden-challenges-of-geothermal-energy-risks-and-drawbacks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">geothermal energy</a> can all have power sources in your home or business to supply your needs.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">1. Solar Energy</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Solar power is probably the most widely used source of these options.  While it can be expensive to convert your home or business over to solar energy, or to an alternative energy source for that matter, it is probably the most natural source to turn over to.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">You need your wind turbine to power your home or office, but wind energy has been used for centuries to pump water or for commercial purposes, like grinding grain into flour.  While many countries have wind farms to produce energy on a full-scale basis, you can have your wind turbine at home or at your business to provide electricity for your purposes.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">There are a number of ways that researchers are improving our understanding of the green technologies available, how these can be used, and ultimately how to reduce the carbon emissions generated through the energy production process. Researchers at University College London recently published a study which analyzed the electricity demand profiles from 10,000 households across Europe. The researchers were able to develop algorithms to estimate the amount of power consumed in each house. The findings are particularly useful as a baseline reference point for comparing different energy options, and also to provide an accurate indicator of the amount of energy that could potentially be saved through the adoption of new energy technologies.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The development of renewable energy is a crucial part of efforts to tackle climate change, and the data available to researchers such as those at UCL, can be used to provide evidence to policy makers and the public alike. For example, a recent report produced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) concluded that there was a significant potential to increase the penetration of solar PV, and hence reduce the amount of CO2 emitted. However, DECC found that the available data was inadequate to quantify this potential. As a result, the authors were unable to accurately predict the size of the market, or to identify the barriers to increasing uptake.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This problem is being addressed through collaboration between industry and academics. A number of organizations, including the British Solar Trade Association, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Renewable Energy Association, are working together to produce a common dataset on solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, to help researchers better understand the market potential of the technology.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For other researchers, the data is not always available. While it is possible to use household surveys to capture information on household consumption patterns, this method has several limitations. Firstly, it can be difficult to capture the nuances of the behavior associated with different technologies.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For example, if you ask a household whether they would consider installing a solar PV system, you will get a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, but you won’t get the details of why they choose one over another. If you instead asked people directly why they selected a particular technology, you would get a more accurate reflection of the actual choices being made. Secondly, even if you do gather this kind of detailed data, it does not provide the information needed to identify the full range of options that are available.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The use of data to improve our understanding of energy technologies is not limited to renewables. The ability to track how a technology performs is also vital for the deployment of nuclear reactors. This means that researchers have been using sensors in order to measure the performance of nuclear reactors, and thereby better understand their operation. A recent publication by researchers at the National Nuclear Laboratory and the Institute for Energy Technology provided a detailed analysis of the performance of a reactor at the Dounreay site in Scotland.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">By measuring how the temperature and pressure inside the reactor changed as a function of time, it was possible to model the core’s thermal and mechanical behavior. This led to the development of algorithms which can be used to estimate the reactor’s lifetime, and also provided valuable insight into the processes that occur inside the reactor and how they affect its performance.</p>

The process of putting hydrogen in a car works the same as that of a traditional fuel cell, but it’s cleaner, greener and easier. Hydrogen can be produced from biomass (plants/organic matter) and water.</p>
